Background:International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was introduced in 1994 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It falls on the anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, on September 16, 1987.On that day, 24 countries and the European Union agreed on gradual reduction of chemicals containing chlorine and bromine. Before the end of 1987, progress had been made: for exam-ple, Germany had almost completely ceased to produce chlorofluorohydrocarbons (CFC).Nevertheless, the ozone hole over Antarctica reached its greatest extent in 1996.Most recent investigations have re-vealed, however, that depletion of the ozone layer has ceased and that slow regeneration has taken place.
