Heat exchangers from Kelvion – for greater performance and reduced emissions

Exhaust Gas Recirculation Coolers (EGR) for two- and for four-stroke engines

For effective reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions by exhaust gas recirculation, the exhaust gases may be mixed with the charge air only after they have been cooled. Exhaust gas recirculation coolers (EGR) from Kelvion transfer the heat to sea water or treated fresh water. They feature finned-tube configurations and geometric fin characteristics for maximum efficiency: this minimizes contamination on the gas-side cooling surface. In addition, special structures embossed on the surfaces of the fins create turbulence to ensure that the gas to be cooled efficiently flows through all areas of the heat exchanger. This maximizes heat transfer. Kelvion exhaust gas recirculation coolers consist of stainless steel that is temperature- and corrosion resistant and that offers long service life. For four-stroke engines, the following variants are available: a high-temperature version for exhaust temperatures up to 700 °C, and a low-temperature with downstream drain for exhaust gases up to a maximum of 200 °C. Kelvion exhaust gas recirculation coolers are likewise available for two-stroke diesel engines with performance in medium and top-level ranges. They offer extremely great corrosion resistance: which is necessary owing to the increased corrosion danger for two-stroke diesel engines resulting from the upstream scrubber installed in the gas line.

Cool (cylinder) heads with Kelvion coolers

Kelvion models from the PF series are designed for efficient cooling of oil types such as lubrication oil and gearbox oil, as well as fuels such as marine diesel oil and marine gas oil. These models are available in a range of sizes and versions and are designed for operations up to a maximum of 120 °C and up to 10 bar(g) in the interior of the finned-tube shell, or for applications up to 16 bar(g) on the oil side. Double O-ring seals reliably separate the oil from the cooling medium. In the shell-and-tube heat exchangers from the PF series, not each individual tube features cooling fins: instead, all tubes use one cooling-fin block – a rugged design with good heat extraction. As a result, PF coolers are up to 60 % smaller and lighter in comparison to non-finned shell-and-tube heat exchangers with comparable performance.

The Kelvion series Bloksma NF offers additional, especially compact coolers in its portfolio. They can cool the oil from turbines, diesel or gas engines, gearboxes, and bearings – or can remove the heat from hydraulic units, refrigeration systems, and air compressors. Their compact design enables customers to save costs, beginning with investment outlay. Additional cost savings take place in operation, owing to modest water consumption and low pressure drop. The models in the Bloksma NF series are available with various connection possibilities for a variety of installation situations. The coolers are designed for operations with pressures up to 30 bar on the water and oil sides, and the temperatures of the media can range up to 120 °C.

Plate heat exchangers: modular und efficient

Ship owners can also profit from Kelvion experience in the field of plate heat exchangers – for example, with brazed plate heat exchangers from the GKS and the WP-OC series. The WP-OC models feature flange plates and are ideal for cooling lubrication oil used in high-speed diesel or gas engines. The advantages of WP-OC series models over shell-and-tube heat exchangers are especially apparent in applications involving great volumes and low temperature differences of the media. The brazed heat exchangers of the GKS series also demonstrate effective resistance to the effects of temperature and pressure: they are designed for operating conditions up to 200 °C and a maximum of 40 bar – e.g., also for oil cooling. They are most widely used, however, in heating circuits and in other areas of application requiring the tempering of water.
