GEA Heat Exchangers presents a new generation of the Adia-DENCO® cooling system
31. ottobre 2013 The GEA Adia-DENCO® central cooling system, especially developed for climate control of computer centers, has been functionally improved. The new version is more compact and requires less energy than the first version. With these new models, computer center operators can save up to 70 % in cooling energy, depending on design temperatures. This is possible because this new generation, based on the GEA CAIR air-handling units, exploits both free cooling as well as indirect adiabatic cooling to dissipate heat. As a result, operation of an additional refrigeration system is often unnecessary, or can be restricted to only a few hours per year.
Adiabatic cooling – cooling by evaporation – takes place with the GEA Adia-DENCO in a large double-plate heat exchanger. This heat exchanger humidifies warm outdoor air, which cools it. This air cools the hot return air from the computer center by means of hermetically sealed heat exchange in the recuperator. The air in the computer center is therefore cooled in recirculated-air mode, and it is hygienically separated from the flow of outdoor air.
New nozzle configuration for more output
Previously in such systems, the humidification of outdoor air took place in front of the plate heat exchanger. The new, improved nozzle configuration directly sprays the water onto the plates of the heat exchanger. This direct process procedure not only increases the cooling duty of the adiabatic system, but also reduces the dimensions of the system casing.
Maximum savings by adiabatic technology and free cooling
With outdoor temperatures below 17 °C, indirect free cooling provided by the GEA Adia-DENCO® is sufficient to dissipate the heat load. Additional refrigeration sources (adiabatic systems as well as production of compression refrigeration) remain inactive. The EC fans in the outdoor-air flow operate in low speed ranges during cool outdoor temperatures. With outdoor temperatures of approx. 17 °C and above, the control system matches the fan speed to temperature conditions and switches on the adiabatic cooling system. In this transition zone, the control system uses prevailing water and power costs to determine the point at which support by the adiabatic system is more cost-effective than the autonomous use of free cooling – which minimizes operational expenses. Only when the outdoor temperatures rise above approx. 29 °C is it necessary to switch on an additional peak-load cooler to support free and adiabatic cooling. The optional peak-load cooler can, if requested, also be designed as a redundancy machine for 100 % cooling duty
