25. 03. 2014 GEA Heat Exchangers has completely upgraded its GEA ATpicco low-profile air handling systems: thanks to their flexible modular design, EC motors, and optimal, effective heat recovery, they enable efficient solutions for the ventilation or air conditioning of new or existing building facilities.

With supply- and return-air ratings of 500 to 4,000 m³/h – or from 500 to 2,400 m³ as combination unit – the GEA ATpicco units are ideally suited for the climate control of restaurants, waiting rooms, shops, doctors’ offices, floors of office buildings, and educational facilities. The flatness of the units – with heights of only 355 or 450 mm – means that they can fit above suspended ceilings or under raised floors, and can also be installed behind walls. The GEA ATpicco units are available in three cross-section sizes and two installation heights as supply- or exhaust-air units, or as combination models. The combination units are available with heat recovery as option, with an efficient counterflow heat exchanger.

Multiple energy-saving options
With heat-recovery efficiency of > 90 %, the combination unit contributes to achieving low heating costs. To minimize power consumption and heat losses from return air, the fans are free-running (plug) models driven by EC motors. This solution enables continuously variable control of the fan speed. In combination with demand control, this opens the way to great potential savings – especially when used with a control system that regulates the air-flow rate in conjunction with a sensor for air quality. A louver/bypass chamber in connection with the high-efficiency counterflow plate heat exchanger additionally implements not only an effective frost-protection function, but also energy-saving free cooling. Free cooling enables lowering the room temperature during cool summer nights, for example, without the operation of a refrigeration compressor.

Long life cycle, ease of maintenance, and superior hygiene
System planners can assemble a GEA ATpicco unit in accordance with project-defined requirements, by providing modules such as the integrated heating or cooling coils. Users benefit not only from the energy efficiency and the small physical footprint, but also from simple maintenance: large flaps, doors, and maintenance segments – as well as filters that can be exchanged from the side – make servicing simple. The optional counterflow heat exchanger made of aluminum enables conformity with special hygiene requirements. These units are therefore microbially inert. The condensate drip tray belonging to the cooler module, and necessary for heat recovery, is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel (V2A). Further unit characteristics, such as the rigid casing structure and the coated surface of the outer skin, assure long service life. If requested, the interior walls can be galvanized or provided with other special coating.

The new GEA ATpicco air handling units are available from the second quarter of 2014.
