16. October 2014 The GEA DENCO®-OfficeCool underfloor air conditioning system assures individually controlled climate conditions in offices – including open-plan offices – and, for example, in public buildings and foyers.

Each LECU of the GEA DENCO®-OfficeCool system consists of a fan, a controlled air flap, and an intelligent controller. The LECU maintains the desired temperature at an individual workplace by automatically controlling the flap position and by feeding a mixture of recirculated room air and cool air from the underfloor area into the room.

This underfloor air conditioning system is based on four equipment components: an air handling unit, a chiller, so-called Zone Units, and Local Environmental Control Units (LECU). The air handling units assure sufficient air exchange and supply filtered and pre-tempered air – the primary air – to the individual building zones. The Zone Units, based on the proven GEA Multi-DENCO® close-control air conditioning system, use recirculated air from the respective zones, in addition to primary air. They cool this air to 12 … 16 °C and direct it into the underfloor area. One such Zone Unit serves up to 300 m² of floor space. The LECUs, which are fan cassettes, are installed in the floor. Each of them consists of one fan, a modulating air flap, and a controller. The LECUs maintain constant the temperature desired and set for each workplace by mixing locally circulated room air with cooler air from the underfloor area, and by directing it without drafts into the room. This system, with its overall harmonization, assures that the general room temperature remains stable.

As a result of its modular concept, OfficeCool is scalable and is effective for both small buildings as well as for entire high-rise buildings. The Zone Units are available in four model sizes. For the largest model, the maximum cooling duty is approx. 30 kW, and the maximum air flow is 6,300 m³/h, which are sufficient for 15 LECUs. The footprint of the smallest Zone Unit is only 600 x 600 mm. The building-services management system can control the Zone Units and LECUs.

In addition to its cooling function, the GEA DENCO®-OfficeCool system can also be configured for heating. For this configuration, for example, a chiller and a heat pump can be combined and the Zone Unit heat exchanger can be supplied with cold or warm water, or configured as a split heat exchanger. Alternatively, a low-pressure hot-water heater (LPHW) can supply the Zone Unit. In the case of building space that must be only rarely and only slightly heated, a third option is installation of electrical heating in the Zone Units or in the LECUs.

The benefits of the OfficeCool concept include small space requirements, since the existing underfloor space, which is often available in any case, can be used for climate control. Installation of the air treatment units is simple and can be delayed until the end of the construction phase, or can be quickly adapted to the individual wishes of the users. If room allotment changes during the course of OfficeCool use, it is possible to shift the LECUs without great expense. Construction costs with GEA DENCO®-OfficeCool are less in comparison to projects with ceiling climate control systems, since the absolute height between floors with OfficeCool, for example, can be 3.55 m instead of 4.0 m. This means that the height of the building can either be less (with less construction material), or the same height with more floors. In some countries of Europe and Asia, and in Arab countries, users are already satisfied with their use of GEA DENCO®-OfficeCool, since the system offers – in addition to comfort and environmental benefits – fast amortization and short construction times.
