GEA expands its commitment to schools

Press Release

15. May 2008 HVAC specialists collaborate with the Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Herne, Germany

GEA Air Treatment GmbH will in future collaborate with the Otto Hahn Gymnasium (higher secondary school) in Herne. As part of the Cooperation Network for School and Business (KSW), in Bochum and Herne, GEA will give pupils a look into the business world, beginning with the coming school year. After the Lessing School in Bochum, the Otto Hahn Gymnasium is the second school that GEA supports with practically oriented curriculum content and excursions. The purpose of this collaboration is to provide pupils with knowledge of business and company operations that they can get to know with GEA in its corporate environment. A number of measures have been planned here. In physics classes, GEA technicians will conduct experiments with pupils on air-treatment technology. In German classes, the Human Resources Department will provide tips for an effective job application. In social sciences, GEA will describe its role as an example of structural transformation in the Ruhr Area, and in geology the company will explain to pupils the challenges of globalisation.

“After our positive experience with the Lessing School, we are pleased to be able to work with another school,” said Dr. Hugo Blum, CEO of GEA Air Treatment GmbH. For 3 years already, GEA has conducted similar projects at the Lessing School. And not only the school has profited from this collaboration: Blaum continues, “Through our work together, we explain to pupils how HVAC systems function – and gain contact to young people whom we would like to welcome later for traineeship at GEA.”

The Cooperation Network for School and Business (KSW), through which our collaboration came about, was founded in 2001 in Bochum by the Arnsberg County Council, the municipalities of Bochum and Herne, and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce. Its declared objective is to enhance the collaboration between schools and business on a sustainable basis. Including the Otto Hahn Gymnasium, a total of 3 schools by now collaborate in Herne with companies from the region.
