Reducing costs with GRP mechanical-draft wet cooling towers from GEA Heat Exchangers

September 2013 The days are long past when cooling towers had to be made of concrete: GEA Heat Exchangers has developed a product line made of glass-fiber-reinforced polyester (GRP) with outstanding weather resistance and sustainable cooling technology. GEA Heat Exchangers has now rounded this line downward in size with its new Polacel Gentoo range.

The new Polacel Gentoo cooling-tower range made of glass-fiber-reinforced polyester is 100 % stand-ardized. This makes these mechanical-draft cooling towers especially cost-effective – and yet they are particularly well equipped. The cooling fill elements – developed in the Dutch city of Doetinchem, espe-cially for counterflow evaporative coolers – assure highly efficient heat exchange between air and water. The tower enclosure and water collection basins are made of long-life, corrosion-resistant GRP, and the fan cowling consists of stainless steel. The fan support bearing is made of hot-dip-galvanized steel. Axial fans, installed as standard features, enable quiet, cost-effective cooling and shorten the preliminary run time. The Polacel Gentoo units can be transported without difficulty in containers or on delivery trucks. They are available with their own freely selectable equipment options, in three versions with cooling duty of approx. 1,000, 1,600, and 2,500 kW.

Thanks to its long years of experience and its expertise in the construction of wet cooling towers with counterflow or crossflow configurations, GEA Heat Exchangers can also offer customized, complete cooling-tower solutions, from planning up to erection. Cooling towers made of GRP can be outfitted with a range of highly efficient fill materials: for example, film or trickle fill for liquids with a large share of solid particles. These cost-effective cooling towers are especially effective for industrial applications in the moderate temperature zones of Europe and the Middle East.
