The ozone layer focusses on the essentials

Press Release

16. 09. 2013 On the occasion of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, GEA would like to provide motivation for holistic climate and environment protection. The reason: although the ozone layer in the Southern Hemisphere is regenerating itself, this promotes global warming. As a result, temperatures are also rising in the Southern Hemisphere.

If thoughts concerning refrigeration and HVAC technology are directed only to refrigerants and their influence on the ozone layer and on ozone depletion potential (ODP), the danger arises of missing climate-protection objectives. GEA advises holistic planning – which includes demand-driven resource consumption and CO2 emission, as well as life-cycle costing (LCC) and consideration of the total equivalent warming impact (TEWI values). The latter data include both the greenhouse effect caused by slight leakage as well as the emissions occasioned in plant operation. Efficient and environmentally friendly cooling means application of systems with demand-driven optimization – such as those from GEA. Background: International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was introduced in 1994 by the General Assembly of the United Nations. It falls on the anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol, on September 16, 1987. On that day, 24 countries and the European Union agreed on gradual reduction of chemicals containing chlorine and bromine. Before the end of 1987, progress had been made: for exam-ple, Germany had almost completely ceased to produce chlorofluorohydrocarbons (CFC). Nevertheless, the ozone hole over Antarctica reached its greatest extent in 1996. Most recent investigations have re-vealed, however, that depletion of the ozone layer has ceased and that slow regeneration has taken place.
