HYDROGEN UTILIZATION

MAIN HYDROGEN TYPES

Hydrogen can be obtained from several sources – ranging from fossil fuels and nuclear energy to biomass and renewables. A number of different processes are used which will determine the types of hydrogen produced. The main ones are grey, blue or green hydrogen. We are focusing on green hydrogen, which is the only type produced in a climate-neutral manner.

GREY HYDROGEN

High Carbon Emissions
Low Production Costs
Low Social Acceptance

GREY HYDROGEN

Hydrogen produced from fossil fuels; is currently the cheapest form of hydrogen production, and must be replaced in the decarbonised future.

BLUE HYDROGEN

Low Carbon Emissions
High Production Costs
Low Social Acceptance

BLUE HYDROGEN

Hydrogen produced from fossil fuels with CCS; expected to play a vital role in our transition towards a low-carbon economy.

GREEN HYDROGEN

Zero Carbon Emissions
High Production Costs
Max. Social Acceptance

GREEN HYDROGEN

Zero-carbon hydrogen produced from Renewable Energy; market penetration restrained by high production costs, but tremendous growth potential seen post 2030.

GROWTH DRIVERS

CLIMATE CHANGE

A strong commitment to reducing CO2 emissions is required over the coming decades to achieve the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Green hydrogen has a major role to play because, when produced by electrolysis from renewables, it acts as an emission free energy carrier. This helps to restrict global warming and reach environmental goals set by many governments.

MOBILITY

Hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles have the advantage of short charging times, compared to battery power. They also don’t make demands on the electricity grid.

Driver_EnergyMix.png

FUTURE ENERGY MIX

Because hydrogen can store electrical energy produced from renewables, it balances the grid during periods of high renewable energy production. The energy stored in hydrogen can be used in homes, businesses and vehicles.

Facts and Figures about Hydrogen

MARKET CHALLENGES

END USER AWARENESS

With fossil fuels currently dominating our energy landscape, end users around the globe remain generally unaware of hydrogen as a clean alternative.

MISSING LEGASLATIVE FRAMEWORKS

Fully adapting hydrogen technology comprehensively requires
a homogenous legislative framework.
The US, Germany, Netherlands, UK and France and among the countries leading the way with the first pilot projects.

ENERGY LOSSES

Energy losses occur when energy is transformed from one form to another. Such transformations extend throughout the entire hydrogen value chain, beginning with electrolysis, where electrical energy is transformed to chemical energy, and ending in fuel cells, where chemical energy is transformed back to electrical energy.

COSTS

Setting up the hydrogen value chain of production, storage, transportation and usage represents a significant capital investment. At the same time, the costs must be competitive in comparison with other energy solutions, such as lithium-ion batteries or fossil fuels.
