GEA presents innovations at the marine trade fair SMM

24. July 2012 At SMM – the leading international trade fair in the marine sector for shipbuilding, machinery, and marine technology, to be held in Hamburg from September 4 to 7, 2012 – GEA will present a number of innovations.

Visitors to Hall A3, Stand 212 can become acquainted with various product innovations, including the new EGR cooler generations of GEA Maschinenkühltechnik cools exhaust gases – some as high as 700 °C – to 50 °C before they are again mixed with air of combustion. This sustainably minimizes NOx emissions. One advantage of the fully welded exhaust-gas recirculation coolers (EGR) for large-scale diesel engines is compactness. The application of high-efficiency finned-tube systems likewise contributes to the small dimensions of these coolers.

GEA also introduces a new type of oil cooler: its Bloksma NF for an extensive range of applications, including oil, gas, and maritime uses. It combines the advantages of the standardized, non-welded, plate-fin PF oil cooler and the wider possibilities of the GEA Bloksma N-type with a welded shell. This enables greater flexibility for GEA Bloksma with regard to design codes, connections, and satisfaction of customer needs. The new oil cooler type offers cost effectiveness for compact design solutions in which the PF standard range cooler cannot be used – e.g., pressures up to 30 bar, temperatures up to 120 °C, and design according to ASME VIII-Div.1 / TEMA or AD 2000.

Also presented at the fair will be GEA PHE Systems solutions that will increase worldwide availability of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Special laser-welded plate heat exchangers assure smooth and efficient operations with LNG on board or on land: for compression, cooling, marine transport, and regasification of natural gas before its supply into gas mains.

GEA Bock compressors from GEA Refrigeration Technologies – for example, the F16 range – have already proven successful in HVAC and refrigeration systems for food and beverages on board. This line will now be rounded off by the new GEA Bock F18 compressors. These 8-cylinder compressors feature long-life components, and they are smaller and lighter than earlier piston compressors available for the range from 240 to 280 m³/h. They are also, for example, simpler to install in a machine room. In addition, GEA Refrigeration Technologies will present its worldwide marine service now available around the clock via a central hotline.

With its new BallastMaster ultraV, GEA Westfalia Separator Group once again demonstrates that its new developments are close to the customer and right in line with market needs. For example: treatment of ballast water on board takes place in this system entirely on the basis of filtration and irradiation with UV-C light – i.e., completely without the use of chemicals. Since the self-cleaning system for the lamps is based on ultrasonic technology, no disinfection by-products are produced. The BallastMaster ultraV has a modular design and is therefore effective for use in construction of new ships as well as for retrofitting. The system is already certified according to IMO regulations and will be shown for the first time at SMM in Hamburg.
