Power plant coal ash: cost-effective transport and environmentally friendly disposal – with the GEA Circumix Dense Slurry System
02. April 2014 With its Circumix Dense Slurry System (DSS), GEA Heat Exchangers offers a cost-effective and environmentally friendly procedure for management and disposal of power plant coal ash. Existing ash handling systems can be economically retrofitted with this technology and provide an efficient solution for new power plant projects as well.
This well established and commercially available technology is internationally unique and has been designed for the disposal of various residues, including all ash resulting from the combustion of coal in power plants. In a process specifically designed for this purpose, combustion residues are mixed with water, which can be waste water, to produce slurry that enables simple transport by pipelines to a space-saving and environmentally friendly disposal site. The DSS satisfies relevant government regulations, and addresses and complies with upcoming US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. Circumix not only eliminates fugitive dust, but also encapsulates and considerably reduces leache rates – which in turn reduces the risk of soil or water pollution. In addition, Circumix offers financial benefits to the user with respect to operation and maintenance, and it reduces waste volume compared to other ash-disposal processes. The very low transport costs for DSS have been shown to offer superior economic benefits, especially for plants where waste volume is high and transport distances are long.
