In a key industrial region of Central Germany, Kelvion delivered a customized thermal management solution for a landmark green hydrogen project. This is the first installation of its kind in this area and was developed under significant time pressure.

The project was initiated by a global technology provider specializing in environmental and energy solutions. With a strong focus on sustainable industrial transformation, the company delivers advanced mechanical and thermal process systems across sectors such as water treatment, renewable energy, and resource recovery. Their expertise in green hydrogen production and integrated Power-to-X (P2X) solutions positioned them as a key player in this initiative.

The Challenge: Material Matters

The project required a highly reliable cooling solution for hydrogen and oxygen streams following electrolysis. However, conventional stainless steel was ruled out due to concerns about hydrogen embrittlement and the presence of potassium hydroxide in the process. Kelvion’s engineering team proposed a custom Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger made from a specially selected material that met the demanding chemical resistance and safety requirements.

To address spatial limitations, the unit featured a compact layout enhanced by integrated turbulators, ensuring optimal performance within the available footprint. Additionally, the tubes were manufactured locally in Germany, a decision that not only ensured high material quality but also helped meet the project’s tight delivery schedule.

"Our team’s technical insight and responsiveness were instrumental in delivering a solution that met the customer’s unique requirements. By adapting quickly and recommending the right materials, we were able to support a pioneering green hydrogen initiative with confidence and precision,” says Jaspar Redemann, Head of Vertical Market Power & Energy / Chemicals / Oil & Gas at Kelvion

Project Impact

The system now plays a critical role in cooling hydrogen and oxygen streams post-electrolysis, ensuring safe and efficient operation. The project successfully met the customer’s goals for reliability and effectiveness, and has already led to follow-up opportunities in other regions.
