Riot Platforms, Inc. is at the forefront of blockchain technology and operates large-scale data centres to support its mining operations. At its new Corsicana facility, which will eventually have a capacity of 1 gigawatt, Riot turned to Kelvion for a state-of-the-art thermal management solution.
Having previously worked with Kelvion at their Rockdale site, Riot again relied on Kelvion's expertise to ensure the seamless integration of advanced thermal management systems tailored to the unique needs of high performance data centres.
The challenge
The Corsicana data centre presented several challenges, including the need for rapid deployment, efficient cooling of high-density mining hardware, and sustainable water management.
As David Schatz, Senior Vice President of Operations at Riot, explained, "We operate on a very large scale, and it can be daunting for a lot of companies. But Kelvion is a company that gets in there and gets their hands dirty. They work well with our teams, and there's a lot of collaboration with their engineering department. No matter the challenge, they deliver."
The solution
Kelvion developed a customised cooling solution for Riot, centred around their advanced dry coolers. These coolers were specifically engineered to meet the demanding needs of bitcoin mining operations.
The system was designed not only to meet the heat load demands of the high-density mining equipment but also to incorporate sustainable water recycling. Riot's Corsicana site includes a large retention pond that captures stormwater and allows for the recirculation of cooling water. Kelvion's coolers, built to be water-efficient, fit perfectly within this sustainable framework.
The result
By working closely with Riot’s engineering team, Kelvion was able to adapt the solution to the evolving requirements of the project, maintaining production timelines and ensuring operational goals were met.
Riot’s confidence in Kelvion’s ability to meet the tight deadlines was echoed by Schatz: "Kelvion worked day and night to make small changes as we progressed through the engineering process. No matter the ask, they made it happen - there’s never a ‘no’ with Kelvion."
