The challenge
Finolex Industries, manufacturing PVC pipes and fittings, runs a recycle EDC chlorination feed product interchanger, which also recovers waste heat. The three shell and tube heat exchangers used in the process needed to be cleaned regularly to remove coke particles that were clogging the tubes, which were also prone to leaks.
This led to frequent shut downs, disrupting the smooth operation. Also the units were heavy, difficult to maintain and took up a lot of space.
The solution …
was to replace the units with one K°Bloc welded plate heat exchanger. This is lighter and more compact than conventional shell and tube heat exchangers. It also has self-cleaning properties due to high shear forces on the heat transfer surface that prevent fouling and choking of the tubes. Therefore it is much easier to maintain.
The result
Since the K°Bloc was installed three years ago, it has been operating successfully. Finolex Industries reports that the unit has only needed cleaning once as part of an annual shut down.
The company said: “We also saved a lot on space and foundation due to the compactness of K°Bloc and recovered the price of the unit within a year.”
