LNG the greener alternative
As the maritime industry seeks cleaner energy sources, LNG has emerged as a viable alternative to conventional heavy fuel oils. To support this shift, MEYER WERFT needed a thermal management solution for a fleet of LNG-powered cruise ships.
The right supplier had to meet stringent requirements, including space constraints, specific pressure handling and operational reliability. While the Meyer Werft project had its own defined pressure requirements, our technology is capable of handling up to 320 bar.
Custom-built
We developed a tailored heat exchange system to fit into the limited construction space of the ships, allowing MEYER WERFT to specify orientations (horizontal/vertical) and pipe configurations. With a processing capacity of up to 13,000 kg/h of LNG and 3,000 kW thermal output, our solution ensured an optimal balance of efficiency and safety
It involved double-tube safety and single-tube heat exchangers specifically designed for the regasification process. The double-tube safety models are equipped with a leakage collection space to prevent fluid mixing, ensuring operational safety and allow for safe separation of LNG and the ship side heat source without the need of an intermediate circuit.
Greener and cleaner
These solutions enable the ships to use LNG as fuel and contribute to lower greenhouse gas emissions and a cleaner maritime industry.
The result
With the first orders placed in 2019, five ships have already been completed, while five more are currently under construction. Kelvion remains committed to providing innovative and efficient thermal management solutions that contribute to a more sustainable future.
