02. October 2014 On the occasion of DatacenterDynamics Converged 2014 (London, at ICC ExCeL Conference Centre) GEA Heat Exchangers presents its GEA Adia-DENCO® at stand 242 on level 0. This central cooling solution employs indirect free cooling and adiabatic cooling, resulting in minimum power consumption and a small carbon footprint.

Save up to 70 percent power – with GEA Adia-DENCO® cooling system

The GEA Adia-DENCO® from GEA Heat Exchangers is a central cooling system which has been especially designed for HVAC use in data centres. The system is based on proven GEA air handling units of robust construction. To dissipate the heat produced by servers, it exploits the principle of indirect free cooling in combination with indirect adiabatic humidification throughout most of the year. This results in very low energy consumption because operation of an additional refrigeration system is often unnecessary, or can be restricted to only a few hours per year. The reason: in Central Europe compressor based cooling is only necessary with high outdoor temperatures and low inlet air temperatures. Depending on the design temperature, the GEA Adia-DENCO® enables savings of up to 70 percent in cooling energy.

Adiabatic cooling – cooling by evaporation – takes place with the GEA Adia-DENCO® in large twin series mounted plate heat exchangers by humidification of warm outdoor air, which cools it. High efficiency nozzles directly spray the water onto the plates of the heat exchanger. This direct process procedure not only increases the cooling duty of the adiabatic system, but also reduces the dimensions of the system casing. The chilled outdoor air cools the hot return air from the computer centre by means of hermetically sealed heat exchange in the air to air heat exchanger. Thus it is an indirect adiabatic cooling principle. The air in the data centre is therefore cooled in recirculated-air mode, and it is hygienically separated from the flow of outdoor air.

With outdoor temperatures below 17 °C, indirect free cooling provided by the GEA Adia-DENCO® is sufficient to dissipate the heat load. Additional refrigeration sources (adiabatic systems as well as compression refrigeration) remain inactive. The EC fans in the outdoor-air flow operate in low speed ranges during cool outdoor temperatures. With outdoor temperatures of approx. 17 °C and above, the control system matches the fan speed to temperature conditions and switches on the adiabatic cooling system. In this transition zone, the control system uses prevailing water and power costs to determine the point at which support by the adiabatic system is more cost-effective than the autonomous use of free cooling – which minimises operational expenses. Only when the outdoor temperatures and the relative air humidity are high is it necessary to switch on an additional peak-load cooler to support free and adiabatic cooling. The optional peak-load cooler can, if requested, also be designed as a redundant machine capable of delivering 100 % cooling duty.
